PatrolThere are 39 men and women in the patrol division. These officers patrol the 16 square miles of Edina, 24 hours a day, every day of the year. In 2009, they responded to approximately 44,000 calls for service. Those calls ranged from suspicious noises to death investigations. The most frequent calls include alarms, medical emergencies and traffic accidents. The traffic unit is also a part of the patrol division.
On a fully staffed eight-hour shift, one supervisor oversees six officers who are assigned to one of five zones. Officers are responsible for preventative patrol in their assigned zone, but may be dispatched to any part of the City in an emergency. Officers take thousands of reports every year, and made more than 1,500 arrests in 2009. Most of the crime reports are for theft and other property crimes. Officers taking a crime report will provide the victim with an information card that includes the officer’s name, the case number and victim assistance information. The Edina Police Department subscribes to the precepts of community-oriented policing. Residents are encouraged to call with any concerns or complaints. The assigned officer is responsible for working with the resident or business owner to correct the problem. For more information, contact Lt. Jeff Elasky at 952-826-1611. Please call whenever you need assistance – under-reporting of crime reinforces criminal activity and may reduce the ability of the police to solve other crimes. Please note: Police reports are not taken online. Criminal or suspicious activity should be called in to 9-1-1 so an officer may be dispatched to assist you and assess the situation. This site is not monitored every day. |
